Lajpat Nagar flyover develops cavity
New Delhi: A massive cavity has developed between two girders on Ashram-Lajpat Nagar flyover in Ring Road that connects South Delhi to Noida in Uttar Pradesh. The Ring Road or Mahatma Gandhi Road is one of the busiest routes in the city.
A crack of around one-feet has appeared on the flyover that leads to major traffic jams in the area. In recent times, many accidents have reportedly occurred due to the gap.
A gap between two girders was noticed on the Lajpat Nagar flyover as early as January this year.
Regular commuters have said, “It’s like risking your life daily.”
“The issue is neither addressed by Delhi government nor by the Centre that runs MCD,” said Vijay Singh, a commuter.
The Public Welfare Department termed the gap as shrinking of the girders during the winters. It said that every flyover has joints between the two girders, which are supported by the pillars. In summers, these girders expand and in winters they contract due which the gap has developed.
The engineers said it usually takes 15 days to fix such gaps during which time the traffic is routed from a single lane. They said the repair work will be carried out from January 2 when traffic on one side will be diverted under the flyover and the gaps will be filled with joints.
