New Delhi: A Chinese businessman, who is staying in the country for research work, was allegedly assaulted with an iron rod and robbed of Rs 2.5 lakh along with some foreign currency and other articles at gun point by four unidentified men in Central Delhi’s Karol Bagh.

The incident was reported on July 26. The police has procured CCTV footage of the assault but is yet to make any breakthrough in the case. “To record the victim’s statement, we are arranging for a translator. The victim is unable to communicate in English; he only speaks Chinese,” said a police official.

The victim, Xie Zvoming, had come to India on a business trip and was staying at a hotel in Karol Bagh, said his business friend, Dholwani Yogesh Kumar, who is also the complainant in the case. Mr Kumar said that the incident took place around 6.45 pm on July 24 when Mr Xie, accompanied by his employee, was walking towards a cab.

Mr Xie was on his way to the airport to travel to Hong Kong. When Mr Xie and Mr Kumar’s employee, Deepak Chopra, reached Joshi Road, they were attacked by four men. Two of them carried guns and captured Mr Chopra, while the other two, who had surrounded the foreign national, were armed with an iron rod.

After attacking Mr Xie on his chest and shoulders with the iron rod, the miscreants managed to snatch the two bags that the victims were carrying, including the one in which Mr Xie had brought some foreign currency with him.

After the assault and robbery, the four assailants came together and threatened the duo saying that they would pull the trigger. According to the complainant, they ran to a nearby building and hid themselves under a staircase till the men went away and police reached the spot. The incident was captured on the CCTV camera installed in a nearby shop.

Mr Kumar said that Mr Xie was headed to the airport and wanted to do some shopping in Karol Bagh before leaving. He, however, encountered the robbers on the way. He was scheduled to go to Hong Kong on the day of the incident following his two days’ stay at Hotel China Town in Karol Bagh. The Rs 2.5 lakh that he was robbed of had been sent by Mr Kumar which the victim had requested in order to make some purchase. “The victim has received internal injuries. He is currently staying at a hotel in the city. We will record his statement soon,” said a police official. A case of robbery and common intention has been registered.
