Rebel MLA quits BJP, joins Cong in span of day
Nagpur: On a day that saw developments in quick succession, rebel BJP MLA Ashish Deshmukh quit as a member of the state Legislative Assembly primary and as a primary member of the party and within hours, met Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Wardha only to join the party formally.
“The situation of the farmers and the youth has worsened in the last four years but the government is only indulging in vote bank politics to win elections and divide the nation,” Mr Deshmukh, who represented the Katol constituency in Nagpur district, said while tendering his resignation.
He sent his resignation to House speaker Haribhau Bagde and will be personally meeting the latter on Wednesday.
As the BJP has been ignoring the people, I am tendering my resignation as a MLA and member of the BJP, he added.
Accompanied by his father, Ranjeet Deshmukh, who was the state agriculture minister and two-time president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr Deshmukh was greeted by Mr Gandhi at the public rally of the Congress held after the CWC meeting at Wardha on the occasion of the 149th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
