Two arrested for carrying 1000 kg beef

Beef of seven to eight bulls was being carried from Karad to Pune market for sale.

Pune: The Bharati Vidyapith police seized more than 1,000 kg of beef on Thursday morning that was being transported for sale and arrested two for the same.

Dattatray Madane, assistant police inspector, Bharati Vidyapith police station, said, “We received a tip off that the beef was being transported in a car numbered MH10BR0845 from Katraj Chowk near Bharati Vidyapith police station.”

“Accordingly, a team of police did patrolling in the area and found the car with the same number. Our team asked the driver and the cleaner what they were transporting and we were told that they were carrying scrap and junk for sale. There was junk and scrap at the backside of the car. But when we inspected the car properly, we found out beef in large quantities hidden behind the junk,” he added.

Shivshankar Swami, an activist, who lodged a complaint with the police, said, “The beef was going to be sold in Gultekadi market in Pune. Accordingly, we kept a watch and caught the vehicle and informed the police. The beef was worth around Rs 70,000-80,000.”
