Trinamul worker's body found floating in a pond

The Trinamul Congress worker of Bhangar in South 24 Parganas was found murdered ahead of the formation of panchayat boards in the district.

Kolkata: A Trinamul Congress worker of Bhangar in South 24 Parganas was found murdered ahead of the formation of panchayat boards in the district. Shibu Debnath (65), the victim, was missing since Saturday night. On Sunday morning local residents found his body floating in the pond at Saihati. When a police team rushed to the spot to recover the body, a group of Trinamul workers resisted them and started protesting.

They alleged that Debnath was killed by the BJP workers and demanded punishment for the accused. Following assurances from the police, they ended their agitation. The body was sent for post-mortem. Debnath’s family held the BJP responsible for his murder. According to them, he got involved in an altercation with some BJP workers in the area recently. On Saturday morning a man, Haru Debnath, came to Shibu’s home and called him. Shibu left with him only to return in the afternoon.

He again left home in the evening but did not return home. Shibu’s family members then started searching for him in the area. They however returned home empty-handed after 1.30 am. Local Trinamul leader Kaizar Ahmed said, “Shibu was an active worker of our party. He worked as a supervisor. His sudden murder left us in pain. We can not understand why was he killed. We request the police to take steps to catch the culprits. We are also offering cooperation with the administration.”
