Kolkata: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee urged people of the state on Monday to consume eggs from the state without apprehension. She asked them to check if the eggs were from Bengal and then consume them without fear since there was nothinh wrong with the state’s poultry produce.

“There is absolutely no problem with the eggs produced in Bengal. Just make sure that they are Bengal’s eggs. I had a discussion with the Bengal Poultry Federation and I have given them the responsibility to label the eggs produced in Bengal. I urge people to eat these eggs” Ms Banerjee said while addressing a public meeting at Kharagpur in West Midnapore on Monday. She said that a probe was underway on the matter. “We are examining the eggs that have come from outside. Preliminary reports say there is nothing objectionable. We will do three or four additional investigations. Please remember eggs can be of different varieties,” she said.

She, however, made it clear that action will be taken if there is any truth in the matter. “I had asked the Federation whether costs would increase in case plastic is used in eggs and they said that it would cost more than regular ones,” she said, adding that eggs let off a foul smell when they rot.

Meanwhile, a preliminary report after examining an alleged plastic egg was submitted before the enforcement branch of the Kolkata police on Monday evening, hinting that the egg was rotten and there was nothing like plastic or any other artificial element in it. The detailed report is awaited and we hope to get it by this week,” an EB officer said.

In the midst of the chief minister’s efforts to allay fears, the police has arrested three egg sellers: one from Panchasayer area in Kolkata and two from Halisahar in North 24 Parganas for selling seemingly artificial eggs.

The English Bazar municipality in Malda gave orders to stop giving eggs to children in mid-day meals.
