Mukul Roy to be face of November 10 rally
Mukul has been roped in by the BJP eyeing panchayat elections next year.
Kolkata: The BJP is planning to introduce Mukul Roy formally to its workers as its key functionary at its rally in the city on November 10. The rally to protest the alleged atrocities by the Trinamul Congress will be held at Shahid Minar ground. It will also be the first public appearance of Mr Roy in a new party and with a new position.
He is also expected to address the rally. It is not however clear which position would be accorded to Mr Roy who has been roped in by the BJP eyeing the panchayat elections in the state scheduled next year.
Sources indicated that the former Rajya Sabha MP would be given the role of strengthening the party’s organisation at the booth-level which is known to be his domain. During the day the state BJP leadership held a meeting on the November 10-rally and Mr Roy's participation to it.
State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said, “Mr Roy joined BJP as a worker without any condition. He will be assigned the task required in a suitable capacity after discussing it with him. We will fully exploit his capability and experience. In all likelihood he will come here on November 6 and he would be present at the November 10-rally.”
He elaborated, “Mr Roy ran a party in the panchayat elections and ensured the party's victory. He knows everyone at the booth-level and the people also recognise him. In many booths we do not have our presence. His induction will strengthen our party's presence at the booth level with his followers’ entry which will be a boost to our base.”
On Mr Roy's alleged links with Saradha and Narada cases, the Kharagpur MLA added, “The BJP is fighting against corruption. We will not accommodate anyone in our party with corruption links. We however do not hold someone guilty untill his offence is proved.”
He however maintained that many others would switch to the BJP courtsey him and not Mr Roy. A day after his induction, Mr Roy called up Mr Ghosh in the afternoon. Their conversation lasted for around half-an-hour during which Panchayat polls came up, sources revealed. Mr Roy is expected to arrive the city from New Delhi on November 6 morning.
He will visit his home at Kanchrapara in North 24 Parganas from where he would travel to the state BJP headquarters at Muralidhar Sen Lane in central Kolkata, sources added. Trinamul minister Firhad Hakim however maintained that Mr Roy's entry to the BJP would not affect the ruling party anyway.
