3 of a family killed in building collapse

At around 11.30 am, the first and second floors of the four-storeyed building on Shibtala Lane at Dhakapatty in ward no 23 of the KMC dislodged.

Kolkata: Three members of a family were killed after an old building where they were living collapsed at Posta in Burrabazar on Tuesday morning. The victims were Taraprasanna Saha (90), his wife Shobharani (70) and their daughter Beauty Roy (52).

At around 11.30 am, the first and second floors of the four-storeyed building on Shibtala Lane at Dhakapatty in ward no 23 of the KMC dislodged.

The aged couple and their daughter, who used to stay at the first floor, fell trapped inside the debris. Three other stay at the second floor. Two of them were not present home during the incident.

The police, fire brigade and disaster management group personnel rushed to the spot. The aged couple and their daughter were taken out and were rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where they were declared brought dead.

The three bodies were sent for post-mortem. According to the KMC, the dilapidated building was declared dangerous. Even sanction for building a new house was also issued, sources revealed adding that the family was however yet to vacate the building. KMC mayor Sovan Chatterjee said, “Its a sad incident. It is an old problem. We are trying to resolve it. Nothing can not be done however unless the citizens cooperate with us.”
