Pension denied, senior citizens shut post office

Kolkata: Senior citizens, who were unable to receive their pension due to lack of cash, forcibly shut down a post office in Ganguly Bagan on Monday. To mark their protest, they also blocked the road.

Similar protests were seen in several areas in the city where angry people staged a demonstration outside ATMs and banks after failing to withdraw cash. In Beniapukur area, people outside a nationalised bank organised a protest after the ATM ran out of cash. In Murshidabad district’s Hariharpara, angry people broke glass windows of a nationalised bank after they could not withdraw money due to lack of cash.

Back in the city, people stood in queues for long hours to withdraw money on the first working day of the week. The situation was same across the city as long queues were spotted outside each and every bank and ATM which dispensed cash.

Meanwhile, city mayor Sovan Chatterjee said the state government would help the bereaved family of 52-year-old Kallol Roy Chowdhury who died after suffering a massive heart attack while standing in a queue outside an ATM on Saturday.

The family had said that they were struggling to collect money for the state government employee’s last rites due to cash crunch. Responding to their appeal, the state government decide to help the family members of the deceased.
