Kolkata: A police team came under a brazen attack by the angry villagers at Shyampur in Howrah early on Saturday leaving seven cops injured.

The police went to take action into a land dispute which has been continuing between two families of Motiar Munshi and Hanif Munshi at Gorchumuk for a long time.

The police move came after fresh trouble erupted on Friday when some houses were vandalised.

A complaint was lodged with the police. When the police went on a raid in the wee hours, a group of 25 villagers armed with rods and swords, attacked them suddenly.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of the Shyampur police station Suman Das and his junior Tarun Purakait, an assistant sub inspector received deep injuries alongwith five others.

The injured were rescued after reinforcements were sent.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital from where Mr Das was shifted to Belle Vue Clinic. He has been put on ventilator. His condition is critical.

The OC suffered haemorrhage after he was hit with a rod on head from behind, according a civic police volunteer Prasenjit Majhi who said he also was beaten. A medical board has been set up for the OC’s treatment.

The doctors have decided to not to go for a surgery untill Mr Das recovers from haemorrhage.

Son of a cop: late Mrinal Das, Mr Das, stays at Ramkrishna Thakur Lane with his mother, wife and 10-year-old son.

He joined the force in 2002 after quitting the job of a teacher at Ramkrishna Mission in Rishra.

Mr Das was recently promoted. He was scheduled to join as an inspector in the district intelligence branch.

The police have arrested seven accused including Motiar for his role in the attack. They were produced at the Uluberia Court which has remanded them in the police custody for five days.
