Mamata Banerjee writes to Sushma Swaraj over attacks in USA

In the Assembly, the Trinamul Congress MLAs also held agitation over the attacks on the Indians in the US.

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday wrote to external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj over the frequent attacks on Indians in the US and urged her to take steps at “the highest level”.

“It is indeed a matter of great concern and my heart goes out to share the sufferings that have come upon their family members. Since the number of Indians studying, working and living in the US is very high, such incidents are causing a situation of panic amongst their family members living in India,” she said in a Facebook post in the afternoon.

The chief minister added, “I have requested the Union minister to kindly see that the matter is taken up at the highest level, so that these types of incidents do not recur and the Indians living in the US feel safe and secure.”

This was the second time within a day she has expressed her concern over the dangerous trend in the US. On Sunday, Ms Banerjee had tweeted, “Two more shocking killings of Indians in the US. GoI (Government of India) must take this up with the US government on an urgent basis.”

In the Assembly, the Trinamul Congress MLAs also held agitation over the attacks on the Indians in the US. After the first half of the day’s session, they took out a rally on the Assembly premises to condemn the attacks on Indians.

They later returned to the House to attend the session after the recess. The same issue was also evident in the rally of the Trinamul’s women cell led by former party MLA and ex-minister Chandrima Bhattacharya during the day in the city where the ruling party’s female activists were found shouting slogans against hate crimes.

According to Trinamul insiders, the party has found a fresh opportunity to train guns on the BJP. It plans to attack the Modi government, questioning its foreign policy, in context of the series of attacks on the Indians in the US when the session would get underway at the Parliament on March 9, sources added.
