Cash crisis shuts down two firms; 3,300 lose job

Kolkata: Over 2,500 employees became jobless on Tuesday as the management of Shree Hanuman Jute Mills in Howrah issued a suspension of work notice at the mill gate. The closure of the jute mills was prompted by the cash crunch created by demonetisation.

The Priya biscuit unit at Agarpara in North 24 Parganas district was also closed down leaving nearly 800 workers unemployed.

“With deep regrets management is hereby informed to the general body of workers and the operative Trade Unions of this mill that regarding delay of payment of wages due to discontinuation of currency note of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 non co-operation activities from the part of some workers have been increasing day by day causing labour unrest, unlawful violence activities has took place in each and every shift (sic),” read the notice.

“The management has been compelled to declared ‘temporary suspension of work’ on and from December 5 till further notice,” the statement added.

The workers of the jute mill, which is located in Ghusuri in Howrah, alleged that the management has used the demonetisation move as a tactics for closing it.

The Priya biscuit company was closed down with the management alleging huge loss.
