Acid thrown from taxi at passerby, 3 injured

Local residents found three women screaming for help and begging for water at nearby shops to heal their burn injuries.

Kolkata: A group of pedestrians mostly young women were injured after a group of youth threw acid on them from a moving taxi at Panditiya Road in south Kolkata on Sunday evening. The police impounded the taxi on Monday. But its driver: Sheikh Noor Mumtaz, alias Ricky, is absconding.

He is a resident of Kalighat. The incident took place at around 9.30 pm. When the taxi (WB04F7593) was running along Panditya Road, four youth who were inside threw acid on the female pedestrians at three locations near Dover Terrace.

The injured women were given water at a shop.

Angry locals gave a chase but failed to stop the taxi. Within few minutes they however found the taxi coming, but without a passenger. Angry locals stopped the taxi and vandalised it. But Ricky managed to escape. The three women were rushed to SSKM Hospital where they received first-aid for burn injuries. The police called the taxi owner, Jayanta Pal, for questioning later.
