IPS officers removed from strife-torn area

Kolkata: In a major reshuffle, the Mamata Banerjee government has removed IPS officer Bhaskar Mukherjee from the post of superintendent of the police (SP) of North 24 Parganas for his apparent failure to tackle the communal clash at Baduria in North 24 Parganas.

Along with him, his superior, IPS officer Ajey Mukund Ranade has also been removed from his post of Inspector General (IG) of South Bengal, under which North 24 Parganas falls.

Mr Mukherjee had also come under attack by an angry mob that left him injured when he visited Jadurhati recently.

The government's move came a day after the transfer of Nasim Akhtar, inspector-in-charge (IC) of the Basirhat police station.

Mr Mukherjee has been transferred to the Bidhannagar City police where he has been appointed as deputy commissioner (DC) of Zone-II (Airport division). He has been replaced by C.Sudhakar, who was the DC (Headquarters) at the Bidhannagar City police, as the new SP(North 24 Parganas).

K.Sabari Raj Kumar, who was the DC of Zone -II (Airport division), has been appointed as the DC of Zone-I (Bidhannagar). Mr Ranade has been transferred to the criminal investigation department where he has been posted as IG (I). Sanjay Singh, who was the director at the directorate of economic offences wing of the state police, has been appointed as the additional director general (South Bengal).
