NGO worker held for duping woman

On Friday, Dipankar was remanded by the court in the police custody till September 18.

Kolkata: An NGO worker was arrested by the detective department of the Kolkata police for allegedly duping a woman on the pretext of offering her a job.

The accused, Dipankar Bhattacharya, was arrested from the office of an NGO, Centre For Preservation of Democratic Rights (CPDR), at 43 BB Ganguly Street at around 6 pm on Thursday.

The arrested NGO worker stays and works there. The woman, Mohua Gayen of Gobindapur at Keleti in Ausgram of Burdwan, alleged that Dipankar had lured her to pay Rs 2.5 lakhs for a job of gram panchayet sahayak.

“Projecting himself as a philanthropist and a social worker, Dipankar assured her the job since he had some links with high government officials. Ms Gayen’s husband paid an initial amount of Rs 50,000 through bank NEFT into the account of Dipankar,” joint commissioner of police (crime) Vishal Garg said.

“But Ms Gayen did not get the job. Dipankar would often flaunt his image of being a social worker to induce unemployed youth in paying heft sums on the pretext of arranging government jobs,” he added.

On Friday, Dipankar was remanded by the court in the police custody till September 18.
