Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday rejected the bail prayer of Monua Majumdar, accused of conspiring with her alleged paramour to kill her husband in May this year.

A division bench presided over by Justice Joymalyo Bagchi rejected the bail prayer of Majumdar, who has been in custody since May 17 on charges of conspiring with her alleged paramour Ajit Roy to kill her husband Anupam Singha.

The court directed the Sessions court at Barasat in North 24 Parganas district to expedite trial in the case and asked the petitioner to cooperate in the trial.

Praying for bail, Majumdar's counsel S Ganguly submitted that she had been in custody for 176 days and since investigation was complete, further custody was not required.

He also claimed that evidence against her in the case was flimsy and based on her telephonic conversation overheard by two witnesses.

The prosecution counsel opposed the bail prayer claiming that there was ample evidence to show that Majumdar had taken Roy to her husband's home in the afternoon and left alone after locking the house from outside after two hours at Barasat on May 3, when the crime took place.

Singha, who was a travel agency employee, was killed when he entered the house at around 10 PM on returning from work.

Roy was arrested on charges of killing Singha in his home with a blunt weapon.

Monua Majumdar, who was staying at her parental home for around two months before the killing of her husband, was also arrested for allegedly conspiring with Roy to kill her husband.

The prosecution also claimed that there was electronic and forensic evidence to indicate the complicity of Majumdar.

Hearing both the parties, the court rejected Majumdar's bail prayer.
