Kolkata: A prison doctor, who is also reportedly the family physician of a top prison official, was arrested late on Friday for allegedly smuggling huge stashes of drugs, liquor, and things that aren’t allowed inside the Alipore Central Jail.

Amitabha Choudhury, the accused, was posted in the same prison for the past ten years.

For the last three years he had been on night-duty here. He also serves a senior IPS officer, posted at the directorate of correctional services, as the family doctor sources claimed. At around 11 pm deputy inspector general (prison) Biplab Das was waiting at the gate of the prison alongwith the jail superintendent Shubhendu Krishna Ghosh and a team of eight jail guards following a tip-off.

When the doctor was about to enter the prison to join duty after getting down from a taxi, he was stopped for search.

Around 2.2 kgs of Ganja, four litres of liqour, 35 mobiles, 29 mobile chargers, Rs 1.46 lakhs in cash were recovered from the doctor’s hand bag apart from packets of spices and blades during the search.

The seized items were to be supplied to the prisoners.  The doctor was handed over to the Alipore police which arrested him.
