Kolkata: Months before her marriage, a young research scholar committed suicide on Sunday by hanging herself from the ceiling of her home in Jadavpur. The deceased, Sukanya Poddar (26), was a resident of Baghajatin Station Road.

She was staying with her family on the second floor of a three-storey apartment. A post graduate in microbiology, Ms Sukanya was associated with research at the Jadavpur University. She also used to work as a part-time lecturer in a college. Her family members did not notice anything abnormal when she got up on Sunday morning.

Ms Sukanya went to her room at around 10 am. Sometime later, they however found the door of the room closed from inside. When she did not open the door despite repeated knocks, the family members alerted their neighbours who broke open it only to find Ms Sukanya hanging from the ceiling.

The position of the hanging body surprised the police initially. Why Sukanya covered her head with a black shawl to end her life appeared confusing to the cops. After searching the room, they found a suicide note in which she, however, held no one responsible for her drastic step. The body was sent to M.R. Bangur hospital for post-mortem.

Ms Sukanya’s father Tamal Poddar, a businessman, is in Assam for some work. The police has contacted him. Speaking to other family members, the investigators learnt that Ms Sukanya’s marriage was scheduled this year with her consent. They have seized her mobile phone and laptop for examination.
