Trinamul councillor held for murder
Kolkata: A Trinamul Congress councillor of Howrah Municipal Corporation was arrested by the police on Tuesday for his alleged role in the murder of a security guard a year ago.Sailesh Roy, the accused, is the councillor of ward no 29.
He was summoned to the Howrah police station in the morning for questioning in the murder of Bijoy Mullick, the security guard, near Howrah Mullick Fatak at around 8 pm on June 17. Mullick was shot dead from close range.
The Trinamul councillor was later arrested after he failed to give satisfactory answers. Earlier, five men were arrested by the police in the case.
All of them however told the police during interrogation that Mr Roy was directly involved in the murder. Preliminary investigation revealed that Mullick owned a plot of land that Mr Roy was eyeing to grab for promoting.
When Mullick refused to hand over the land, the Trinamul councillor hatched a conspiracy to eliminate him, according to the police.
Mr Roy was produced at the Howrah court, which remanded him in seven days’ police custody. After his arrest he claimed, “Law is there. I have faith in the law. For the last one year, a game was on to tarnish our party’s image.”
