West Bengal trekker dies near Panpatiya glacier

Some members managed to reach Ukhimath yesterday and informed the local administration.

Rudraprayag: A 34-year-old engineer, part of a trekking team from West Bengal, died near the Panpatiya glacier in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, police said on Wednesday.

Arun Kumar Das (34) was a senior engineer with Indian Railways and a resident of West Bengal, police said adding that they received the information about his death on tuesday. Das was part of a team that consisted of nine trekkers, 12 porters and two guides.

They left Kheeron river at Lambagad in Chamoli district on June 5 and got stranded at Panpatiya glacier.

Some members managed to reach Ukhimath yesterday and informed the local administration.

A team comprising of police officials, local administration, disaster management personnel and local youths was dispatched to Madmaheshwar from here to rescue the trekkers and bring down the body of the deceased, police said.

A special rescue team from Dehradun has also been airdropped in Madmaheshwar for the purpose, they added.
