West Bengal: Trains cancelled, forced to return due to floods

Kolkata: As many as nine North Bengal-bound trains from Kolkata were cancelled, while several others were short-terminated due to the floods there. As a result, hundreds of passengers were stranded. 

Among the cancelled trains was the 25657 Up Sealdah-Silchar Kanchanjungha Express, scheduled to leave Sealdah station at 6.35 am on Monday. The Eastern Railway (ER) informed on Sunday that it had been cancelled as the corresponding down link train, 15660 Dn, which was supposed to arrive at Sealdah on Sunday, had been brought back to Agartala from New Cooch Behar due to the flood situation in Katihar division of North East Frontier Railway.

Two more trains were cancelled during the day: the Howrah-Guwahati Saraighat Express, which was scheduled to leave the Howrah station at 3.50 pm and Sealdah-New Alipurduar Teesta Torsa Express, which was scheduled to leave Sealdah station at 1.40 pm.

Six other trains that were cancelled on Sunday were the Howrah-Dibrugarh Kamrup Express from Howrah, Sealdah-New Cooch Behar Uttar Banga Express from Sealdah, Sealdah-Alipurduar Kanchankanya Express from Sealdah, Sealdah-New Jalpaiguri Darjeeling Mail from Sealdah, Sealdah-New Alipurduar Padatik Express from Sealdah and Kolkata-Guwahati Garib Rath Express from the Kolkata station.

Besides, several other trains were short-terminated. Padatik Express, which left Sealdah on Saturday, was short-terminated at Chatra station and it would return from there to Sealdah. Darjeeling Mail, which left Sealdah on Saturday, was short terminated at Murarai station in Birbhum and returned from there to Kolkata station.

Digha-New Jalpaiguri Paharia Express, which was supposed to reach Malda on Sunday, was short terminated at Malda Town station. It will return from there to Santragachi station. Bangaluru Cantt.- Kamakhya Express, which started its journey on August 11, has been short-terminated at Malda Town.
