Opposition tears into Mamata for supporting Kumar
Kolkata: The Calcutta high court’s withdrawal of relief to senior IPS officer Rajeev Kumar from arrest in Saradha chit fund scam has come a shot in the arm of the Opposition leaders.
Using it as a fresh ammunition they tore into chief minister Mamata Banerjee for rallying support behind the former Kolkata police commissioner. The Trinamul has maintained silence however.
CPI(M) MLA of Jadavpur Sujan Chakraborty alleged, “He is considered to be an educated and efficient officer. What was the need for him to roam around under Ms Banerjee’s protection? He could have done his work according to the law. But he went out of the purview of the law to cover up the documents of chit fund scams. He tried to save the culprits and took a stand against those who were originally in danger.”
He claimed, “In doing all these things he took himself to such a position that everyone has understood that he only covered up all the scams and corruption as an influential. Let all other police officers realise that those who have been close to Ms Banerjee landed in trouble and suffered the most. Will she own the responsibilty if Mr Kumar is arrested because he landed in trouble to get her job done?”
Mr Chakraborty added, “Those who are trying to save the government should learn a lesson from Mr Kumar’s case. It is the job of the police officers keep their spine straight.”
State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said, “The battle has turned out to be Mr Kumar versus Central Bureau of Investigation. But the bigger problem is of Ms Banerjee. She played all out to save him. Now it will be difficult for him.” The BJP MP of Midnapore added, “The CBI is free to arrest Mr Kumar. It earlier called him for questionning only. But he did not go. Ms Banerjee had rushed to his residence to save him from the CBI although she knew she would not be able to save him. Whatever the judge said is right. When the CBI officers were dragged by collar by the cops, she and her party supported it. So it more of a problem for her than to Mr Kumar.”
