Kin of patient who died after surgery meet CM Mamata Banerjee

They earlier lodged a complaint against Medica with Purba Jadavpur police station.

Kolkata: Family members of Sunil Pandey, who died due to alleged medical negligence at Medica Superspeciality Hospital recently, met chief minister Mamata Banerjee at her residence in Kalighat Wednesday morning, demanding justice.

Pandey’s family members said that Ms Banerjee, who is also the health minister, ordered the health department to probe the allegations and also assured to provide a job to Pandey’s wife, Ms Sujata Pandey.

Ms Pandey, along with relatives, went to Harish Chatterjee Street at 10.45 am and met Ms Banerjee. The meeting lasted 15 minutes during which the family complained how Pandey became a victim of medical negligence.

According to Ms Pandey, the chief minister listened to her complaint and told her that Medica may lose its licence if the allegations against the private hospital are found to be true.

She later said Ms Banerjee also offered her a job. In the afternoon, Pandey’s family members also visited Swasthya Bhavan in Salt Lake and lodged a complaint against the private hospital off EM Bypass. They earlier lodged a complaint against Medica with Purba Jadavpur police station.

“Acting on our complaint the police initiated a case on charges under Section 304A and 34 of the Indian Penal Code,” Ms Pandey said.

Sunil Pandey, a resident of Patuli, was admitted to Medica on March 6 for a surgery on his left knee.

The 42-year-old man, however, died due to cardiac arrest on March 13 morning after his left leg was allegedly amputated by the doctors during the surgery.
