Kolkata: A gang of miscreants stormed a Trinamul Congress party office at Bogula in Nadia on Sunday night and shot dead a local Trinamul leader. The victim, Dulal Biswas, was the head of gram panchayat no 1. He was also the president of Hanskhali block. The CID has been entrusted with a probe after the ruling party accused the Opposition of the murder. An FIR has been lodged against 13 persons.

The murder took place at around 9 pm. Mr Biswas was talking to some party workers inside the Trinamul office in Hanskhali, when an armed gang stormed the office and opened fire on Biswas from point blank range. According to preliminary investigations, five rounds of bullets were fired. Wih multiple injuries, Biswas fell dead on the floor as the accused fled.

Biswas had been provided security cover by the police after he apprehended a threat to his life. But the security staff was not present with him during the incident. The police recovered a double-barrel fire-arm, some cartridges and a dagger from near the party office. The police suspect the accused were contract killers who used a silencer while firing.

In the morning, a sniffer dog was engaged to trace the route the accused had used for the escape. The police learnt that the miscreants had fled towards the railways tracks, which were nearby. Trinamul secretary general Partha Chatterjee and chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee visited the area on Monday. They condemned the murder and accused the CPI(M) and BJP for killing Biswas.

The district CPI(M) refuted the charges. State BJP president Dilip Ghosh claimed Biswas fell victim to a faction feud within the ruling party. He claimed, “They kill their own people and blame the BJP.”
