Bangladesh PM adviser slams attack on artistes

Kolkata: Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina’s political adviser H.T. Imam on Tuesday brushed aside the questions of rise of fundamentalists in Bangladesh.

He also condemned the attacks on the artists and intellectuals in the Indian-sub continent.

“We do not support it under no circumstances. Such crimes are beyond mercy. We are undertaking strong punishments for those who are caught,” he said.

“The main policy of our country and government is against terrorism and fundamentalism. We are carrying out our fight successfully. There is no political problem or anything else in Bangladesh now. Everything is normal now,” he said. Mr Imam was speaking to the media on the sidelines of a cultural programme on Mujibnagar Dibas organised by the Bangladesh deputy high commission.

Giving an instance he elaborated, “Only on Monday it was announced that the Bangladesh Awami League formed a national committee to supervise the national elections. Our PM, also the Bangladesh Awami League president, is the panel’s president.”

Mr Imam explained, “I have been elected as the co-chairman with Obaidul Kader, who is the party’s general secretary, has been made the member secretary. Thus we have gone to the field of poll battle.” Asked about his role Mr Imam underliend that he was responsible for the task in 2008 and 2014 also. “Now the Bangladesh Awami League considered me and reposed faith in me after judging that I would be able play the role at this age,” he mentioned.

Asked about the attacks on the intellectuals Mr Imam said, “We do not support it under no circumstances. Such crimes are beyond mercy. We are undertaking strong punishments for those who are caught.”
