Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation Saturday launched a first of its kind trauma care centre for dogs. Based at Entally area, the centre will have veterinary surgeons registered under the West Bengal Veterinary Council.

“We have a dog pound at Dhapa but it deals with sterilisation. There was hardly any place in the government ranks for treatment of dogs that suffer an accident or develop sores. The centre can treat over 35 dogs at a time,” a KMC health department official said.

The KMC launches regular drives for sterilisation of dogs at the Dhapa pound. “There are over 1.5lakh stray dogs in the city. However, since January 2013, not a single person died of rabies in the city. In our country, over 25,000 people have died due to rabies,” the official claimed.

The KMC will provide land in the Behala area to set up a multi-super speciality hospital for animals. “We will send a proposal to the Veterinary Council to conduct training for the would-be practitioners in the Entally trauma care centre,” the official said.
