Kolkata: The examination to recruit 6,000 people as Group-D staff, in which around 25 lakh candidates appeared, went smoothly.

The foolproof arrangements made by the Mamata Banerjee government made the less hassle-free experience possible. The state transport department deployed its full strength of bus fleet and ferry services, besides arranging for luxury cabs so as to enable candidates to reach their respective examination venues.

“As many as 630 CSTC, 330 CTC and 115 WBSTC buses hit the roads in the Kolkata metropolitan area while 650 buses from NBSTC and 577 from SBSTC were also pressed into service,” a senior official of the transport department said. Eastern Railway ran six additional EMU local trains in various sections of the Sealdah division. All the trains halted at all stations instead of the selected ones during 11 to 5 p.m.

Kolkata Metro Railway on Saturday ran 300 Metro trains as on a normal weekday. In fact, 150 trains were run in the Up direction and 150 trains in the Down direction instead of the statutory Saturday services.

Many of the 2.5 lakh candidates from outside Bengal, particularly from Bihar and Jharkhand, had reached Sealdah and Howrah railway stations on Friday. The police and some of the local municipalities set up help desks in Kolkata as well as the districts to provide assistance to candidates.
