Asansol: Congress MLA Sudip Mukherjee was booked under various IPC sections and remanded to one-day police custody on Saturday for allegedly stealing documents from the accounts section of the Purulia municipality.

The police had appealed for a three-day remand, which the chief judicial magistrate court of Purulia district turned down.

Mr Mukherjee was detained on Friday afternoon from an ongoing programme of Indian Railway at Purulia station on allegations that he took away important documents, including a cheque book from the accounts section of Purulia municipality.

The MLA has been booked under Sections 353, 186, 379 and 506 of the IPC. He was produced before the Purulia district court amidst tight security. Both TMC and Congress supporters were present in large numbers and were seen shouting slogans against each other.  TMC supporters staged a protest outside Purulia Town police station demanding the MLA’s arrest. Speaking to the media, Mr Mukherjee alleged that those raising voice against corruption were being put behind bars.
