Kolkata: The death toll in the clash allegedly between two factions of the ruling Trinamul Congress at Labhpur in Birbhum reached to nine as another injured villager died early on Saturday. The police has arrested six people so far, who were produced before the court on Saturday.

Kabirul Mollah, the deceased, had suffered deep injuries when the bombs that were being made at a house in Darbarpur went off on Friday afternoon.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was later shifted to a private nursing home in Burdwan. In the wee hours of Saturday, Kabirul succumbed to his injuries.

While one of those arrested has been remanded to three days’ police custody, five others were sent to three days’ judicial custody. A bomb disposal squad from Burdwan will inspect the spot and examine the bombs recovered. Some blood-soaked garments were recovered during a search along the banks of Mayurakshi river.

TMC Birbhum president Anubrata Mondal meanwhile described the victims as the anti-socials.

“Those who lost their lives while making bombs did not belong to our party or CPI(M) or BJP. They were anti-socials..they were sand mafias. How can others be held responsible if someone dies while making bombs. There was no fault of the police. They are doing their job,” he said.
