CPI leader killed, TMC man hurt in two firing cases

The injured TMC leader Ohidul Islam has been admitted at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.

Kolkata: In two separate incidents of shooting on Wednesday night a CPI (M) leader was shot dead by a gang of miscreants at Mathurapur, while a Trinamul Congress leader was shot at Sonpur in Bhangar under the Kashipur police station area in South 24 Parganas.

The injured TMC leader Ohidul Islam has been admitted at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.

According to police sources, Mr Ohidul, who is the block president of Bhangar II, was returning to his village in Bhangar at night when some miscreants came there and shot four bullets at him near Kathalia bazaar. Three of them missed the target, while one of the bullets pierced his back. The villagers heard gunshots and rushed to the spot to find Mr Ohidul bleeding profusely. He was brought to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata and his bullet was taken out. Local TMC leaders alleged the shooting was the handiwork of “CPI (M)-backed” miscreants, who had joined hands with the Maoists.

In another incident, a CPI(M) leader was shot dead by seven motorcycles-borne miscreants, who pumped bullets at Salauddin Halder (55). The incident took place at Purba Ranaghat area under Mathurapur police station. The victim was also allegedly hacked by the miscreants to ensure death.

CPI(M) leader Kanti Ganguly alleged that the “TMC goons” murdered Salauddin.

Amiya Gayen, TMC block president, refuted the allegations, saying it was a feud over property that triggered the incident.

Police superintendent of Kakdwip police district, Tathagata Basu, said, “The deceased’s wife has lodged a complaint against seven people. Investigation is on.”
