West Bengal: Congress worker murdered during morning walk
Berhampore: A Congress worker was brutally murdered as he went for his morning walk in on early morning, Wednesday in his native village Makrampur in Beldanga.
Police sources said that veteran Congress worker Abul Kalam Azad (58) was walking when armed miscreants intercepted and stabbed him on his neck and belly. Locals rescued him and took him to Beldanga rural Hospital where he was declared dead.
Beldanga Congress MLA Safuzzman said that the victim was an influential Congress worker and a close relative of Rezinagar TMC MLA Rabiul Alam Chodhoury and cousin of Beldanga TMC candidate Golam Kibria Khan.
Though several relatives of the victim defected to the TMC, he remained in the Congress. Congress MLA alleged that TMC goons might be behind the murder. Beldanga police however ruled out any political connection behind this murder. According to preliminary investigation, he might have been murdered due to a land and business dispute. Residents of Beldanga deeply mourned the incident.
Azad owned a house in Beldanga town but lived in his native village Makrampur . No one was arrested till the last reports came in. However, the police remained clueless over the murder.
In a separate incident, one Sahadev Bagdi (50) was killed in Chunatore village in Bharatpur police station area on Tuesday evening over a swan-grazing dispute. Two groups of villagers clashed several times over swan grazing in the pond and bamboo rods, brickbats were hurled. Bhagdi got badly injured and succumbed to death at the Kandi sub-divisional Hospital.
