South Point, MP Birla students to judge Durga Puja
The shortlisted pujas will be ranked as per the fixed criteria for each of the categories.
Kolkata: A group of 40 students from South Point High School and MP Birla Foundation HS School will turn tech-savvy jurists to select best Durga Pujas in the city in different categories this year.
In the evening of Panchami on September 25, the team will visit more than 100 Puja pandals to identify the best idol, best pandal, best ambience and the “Puja with a Heart” initiative for the 19th M P Birla Foundation Puja Utkarsh Samman 2017.
Armed with digital tablets to record their scores for each puja, the student-judges will be escorted by faculty members of both the schools and non-teaching staff.
The shortlisted pujas will be ranked as per the fixed criteria for each of the categories.
The scores, recorded by the student-judges will be digitally transmitted on real-time basis and tabulated to ascertain the final verdict.
The winners’ names will be announced on Sasthi afternoon on September 26.
On Saturday, the group of students was mentored by Jawhar Sircar, a bureaucrat, Goutam Gupta, deputy commissioner of police (II) of Kolkata traffic police and Dr Purba Sengupta, a research scholar.
The subjects which were covered were the aesthetics of the pujas, art and craft of idol-making, fire safety, traffic management, the mythological aspects of the pujas and the significance of the rituals. The awards— comprising cash, medallion, angavastra, certificate of excellence, and the M P Birla Award trophy— will be presented to the winners at a programme on July 4 next year.
