Woman resists molestation bid, thrown' off train
Kolkata: A woman was allegedly thrown off a running train late on Monday night after she resisted attempts to molest her. The critically injured woman was found lying unconscious near the railway tracks at Kumrali village, in between Haroa and Vaslia stations in North 24 Parganas, early on Tuesday.
She has been admitted to Barasat sub-divisional hospital. The incident has once again raised questions on the safety of women passengers in trains.
The woman from Mathurapur in South 24 Parganas had gone to her relative’s house at Basirhat in North 24 Parganas. She boarded the last DN Hasnabad local train bound for Sealdah while returning.
The woman claimed there was hardly any passenger in the ladies’coach she boarded. She was allegedly approached by the suspect with an indecent proposal, and when she resisted, he dragged her to the door of the coach and pushed her off.
The woman suffered severe injuries on her head and face. After finding her, the locals rushed her to Haroa primary health centre from where she was later shifted to the hospital in Barasat.
Eastern Railway spokesperson R.N. Mahapatra said, “The incident has come to our notice. An order has been given to tighten security in trains, including ladies’ coaches, during night. Men will not be allowed to travel in ladies’ coaches of trains. The incident will be investigated in detail. Action will be taken if negligence on behalf of the Railways is found.” He, however, called the incident “stray”.
