Kolkata: An octogenarian woman was found hanging outside a housing apartment’s third floor terrace under mysterious circumstances at Nager Bazar in Dum Dum on Saturday morning.

The incident took place on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road in ward no 27 of the South Dum Dum Municipality. A noose was tied around the neck of Amita Dutta (80), the deceased, from the railing of the terrace.

The body was in standing position near an AC machine on the cornice. Local residents who saw the body expressed their shock.

They accused Dutta’s family members of killing her and then hanging the body to pass it off as a case of suicide.

They said that the security guards of the apartment informed Dutta’s son Nilanjan.

Cops of the Dum Dum police station visited Dutta’s flat on the third floor and recovered the body which was sent for post-mortem.

Nilanjan however claimed that he informed the police first after finding that her mother had committed suicide.

“My mother had tea in the morning, ” he said. His neighbours however rejected his version.

They wondered how an octogenarian woman in the morning could cross the railing on the terrace of an upper floor, get down to the cornice and then hang herself standing there in the open.

Locals said that Dutta came to stay at the flat on rent with her son, daughter-in-law and grand-daughter barely six months ago.

Nilanjan, his wife and their daughter have been detained by the police for questionning.
