Cache of illegal arms seized in Farakka

The accused will be produced at the Jangipur Court on Wednesday.

Farakka: A cache of illegal arms and ammunitions, which was being smuggled from one district to another, was seized by the police at Farakka in Murshidabad on Tuesday afternoon. One person was arrested also. The police received a tip-off that a Malda-based armes dealder was trying to smuggle a consignment to his counterpart based at Bolpur in Birbhum, according to sources. When the consignment was being brought in a motorcycle, a team of cops in plainclothes stopped its rider: Alamgir Sheikh at around 2.30 pm at Farakka Mela ground.

Seven nine-mm pistols, 14 magazines and 49 ammunitions were recovered from him, the police said.

The consignment was kept hidden in the tool-box of the two-wheeler, which was also impounded. Alamgir was arrested. He is a resident of Chakdewnapur at Baishnabnagar in Malda.

The accused will be produced at the Jangipur Court on Wednesday.
