TMC tears into BJP over turmoil in CBI
Kolkata: The Trinamul Congress (TMC) on Thursday alleged that the developments in the CBI have proved that the agency was being “controlled by the BJP to serve its political purpose”.
Dismissing the allegation, the BJP hit back saying the TMC should focus on the “corruption cases of Narada and Saradha chit fund scam”, in which leaders of Mamata Banerjee’s party are under scanner.
TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee carried forward the party’s tirade against the BJP-led NDA government over the ongoing row involving CBI after TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had on Wednesday alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has become the BJP’s policing agency.
“We have been witnessing a series of events that have taken place in the CBI in the last few days. It seems like BJP, which itself is a corrupt political party, is trying to stop corruption in CBI. This is ridiculous,” Mr Chatterjee told reporters Thursday.
“CBI has now become so called BBI (BJP Bureau of Investigation) — very unfortunate!" Ms Banerjee had tweeted on Wednesday.
“The series of events proves that CBI is being controlled by the BJP to serve its own political purpose. Officers are removed and appointed in CBI at midnight,” Mr Chatterjee said.
“We have been alleging this for the last few years and now it has been proved,” he said.
Terming the allegations as “baseless”, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh said, “Why are they so concerned about what is happening in the CBI? They should be more concerned about the corruption cases of Narada and Saradha chit fund scam.”
The Opposition parties have attacked the government over CBI director Alok Verma being divested of his powers.
Meanwhile, the state unit of Congress Thursday organised a protest rally in front of CBI office here. The party has announced holding of protests outside CBI offices across the country on Friday.
“The CBI is handling two important cases related to Bengal-Saradha chit fund scam case and also Narada video scam. In this regard, CBI chaos will help the corrupt leaders associated with the scam, who are being investigated by CBI,” West Bengal Congress unit chief Somen Mitra said.
