Kolkata: A young fashion designer was arrested on non-bailable charge after she ran over a middle-aged man near E.M. Bypass early on Sunday. The accused, Aditi Agarwal, in her early twenties, was driving her sedan in drunken state, according to the police.

The accident took place at around 6.30 am on Park Circus connector leading to E.M. Bypass when the fashion designer, allegedly drunk, broke the red signal and drove across to hit one person, who was waiting for a bus to reach his workplace at the Leather Complex, a senior officer of Kolkata police said.

Driving her sedan (WB08F3438) from Park Circus direction, Aditi was returning home at Narkeldanga from a late night party at a club in south Kolkata. The car was running at around 100 km per hour, preliminary investigation suggested.

“She is unable to talk properly. It’s quite surprising how was she driving the car. The vehicle was running at a very high speed. Initial questioning revealed that she came out of a pub in the Park Street area and was heading towards home after dropping some of her friends. After that the mishap happened,” the officer said.

Hari Mohan Ram (48), a resident of Pagladanga, was crossing the road when the vehicle hit him before losing control and hitting against the road divider, the police said.

Ram was rushed to Calcutta National Medical College where he was declared brought dead.

He worked as a labourer at a factory in the Kolkata Leather Complex. The body was sent for post-mortem.

The police impounded the damaged sedan and arrested Aditi. A case has been initiated by the police under Sections 279 (rash driving), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 427 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.

In the afternoon, Aditi was produced at the court which has remanded her in two days police custody. The police is now interrogating her. While the fatal squad traffic police has taken over the investigation, the sedan will undergo a mechanical test also.
