Jessop case: Court extends Pawan Ruia custody by two weeks
Kolkata: Industrialist Pawan Ruia was again sent by the Barrackpore Court to the custody of the criminal investigation department (CID) for another two weeks. This means he would now have to spend the New Year’s Eve behind bars also after the Christmas.
On Sunday Mr Ruia was produced at the court with the end of his first term of police custody for 14 days in connection with the case in which the ministry of railways lodged a complaint of cheating against him. During the hearing the CID prayed for his custody in connection with a fresh case.
State counsel Rajdeep Majumdar said that Mr Ruia’s remand was sought in connection with a new case at the Dum Dum police station relating to the incidents fire on the premises of Jessop factory.
On December 11 the court granted the CID to book Mr Ruia under three more charges: 120B (criminal conspiracy), 201 (destruction of evidence) and 436 (arson) of the Indian Penal Code while sending him to 14-day-police custody.
This time too the court granted the CID’s plea and sent Mr Ruia to 14 days’ police custody. On Saturday afternoon a CID team led by special superintendent Shubhankar Bhattacharya raided Mr Ruia’s residence in south Kolkata and recovered some important documents for examination.
