West Bengal: Woman found hanging, in-laws under scanner

Her family members alleged that she was murdered before the body was hung by her in-laws to make it look like a suicide.

Kolkata: Mystery has shrouded the death of a homemaker at Budge Budge in the southern outskirts of the city after she came to know of her husband’s extra-marital affair. The victim, Jayanti Panja Dali (34), was found hanging at her in-laws’ residence at Chorial area late on Sunday night.

Her family members alleged that she was murdered before the body was hung from the ceiling fan by her in-laws to pass it off as suicide. A dupatta was tied around her neck. The body was sent for post-mortem which, however, revealed multiple injury marks.

The police initiated a case on dowry death charges against Jayanti’s in-laws suspecting that there was a fight between her and her in-laws before her death.

The possibility of homicide is not ruled out by the cops. On Monday afternoon her husband Buddhadeb (55), a chartered accountant from the same area.

Preliminary investigation revealed that he married her in 2014. Jayanti’s family accused her in-laws of mental torture on her over her dark complexion since marriage. According to them, Jayanti, an MA, was also subjected to pressure to go out for work but she refused.

The police learnt that the couple went on a trip to Digha recently. At the hotel, Jayanti was kept confined in the room by her husband who later went around with another woman. Jayanti saw them through the window, her family members claimed.

She had an altercation with him after he returned to the hotel. Returning home from the trip Jayanti gave an hint to her parents about her husband’s extra-marital affair.

On Monday she was supposed to visit her parents to narrate in detail. The police suspects that her in-laws however came to know of her visit with her parents and they objected to it which led to the fight.
