West Bengal: 68-year old woman found murdered at her home

Preliminary investigation said the victim was strangulated by hands and was then smothered to death.

Kolkata: An aged woman was found murdered at her home in Parnashree on Saturday morning. The victim, Shipra Bhattacharya (68), a widow, was a resident of Fakirpara Road.

The body was seen lying on the floor in a room with blood oozing out from her mouth and ears, said deputy commissioner of police (south west) Meeraj Khalid. Bhattacharya was rushed to Vidyasagar Hospital where she was declared brought dead. The body was sent for post-mortem.

According to preliminary investigation, Bhattacharya was strangulated by hands and was then smothered to death. Mr Khalid added, “After the post-mortem, the autopsy surgeon opined that the probable cause of death may be violent asphyxia because of manual strangualtion and smothering. A case of murder will be initiated.”

The victim’s daughter, Kaveri Bhattacharya (36), and son-in-law Anupam Bhattacharya stay at the same house with her. Questioning the local residents, the police learnt that Kaveri and her husband used to misbehave with Bhattacharya.

Kaveri and Anupam have been detained for questioning after they initially claimed to the police that they had no idea how Bhattacharya died.

Meanwhile, a young homemaker was found lying with injuries at her in-laws’ house in Pragati Maidan on Saturday afternoon. Jhulan Bag (28 was admitted to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. Her husband, Mahadeb Bag, was detained by the police for questioning. Jhulan told the police that she was assaulted with a blunt weapon by her in-laws.
