5 arrested for killing, looting elderly person

The incident took place in the Gokul Nagar area where the accused persons looted Pradip Jaiswal, in the wee hours of Saturday.

Mumbai: The Thane police arrested five persons for killing an elderly person after looting his grocery store to the tune of Rs 40,000 in the wee hours of Saturday. The officials said that the accused and the victim stayed in the same neighbourhood of Rabodi in Thane and that the accused also assaulted the family of the 58-year-old deceased person.

The incident took place in the Gokul Nagar area where the accused persons looted Pradip Jaiswal, in the wee hours of Saturday. The accused and victim allegedly had some skirmishes in the past, reasons of which are being probed by the police. The accused Amin Shaikh took some of his known persons and looted the store.

After the family was informed about the incident, they rushed to the shop along with Pradip. The accused assaulted all the family members and in the process Pradip ended up being roughed up leading to his death later. The family rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead, police said.

The hospital informed the police who identified the accused and arrested them subsequently. “Five persons including Amin Shaikh, his brother Shaukat have been arrested. The duo orchestrated the attack and further investigation is underway,” said an officer of Thane police.

A case of murder has been registered against all the accused. They have been remanded to police custody for further investigation. Police are also probing if there were more accused in the attack.
