85.65 per cent students pass Madhyamik this year

In 2013, the pass percentage was 81.81, in 2014 it was 82.24, in 2015 it was 82.66, in 2016 it was 82.75 with a steep rise in 2017.

Kolkata: The pass percentage of students in the Madhyamik Examination 2017 rose by 3 per cent this year compared to last year.

“The pass percentage this year has been 85.65 up from 82.74 percent in the year 2016,” said Kalyanmoy Ganguly, president of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) while announcing the results of Madhyamik examination on Saturday.

Board officials attributed the rising pass percentage to the revised syllabus of the Board and the questions having a majority of multiple choice type questions. In 2013, the pass percentage was 81.81, in 2014 it was 82.24, in 2015 it was 82.66, in 2016 it was 82.75 with a steep rise in 2017.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the students for their success in the examination. Speaking at a government programme in the late afternoon, she said, “The good results is a clear indicator that the students and the youths are making progress. A day will come when the new generation will be able to say in real sense what Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow and the world day after tomorrow.”

Elaborating on the highlights of the examination, Mr Ganguly said that East Midnapore district fared the best, registering a pass percentage of 96.06 per cent (a rise of 3 per cent in comparison to 2016), followed by South 24 Parganas (90.54 per cent), West Mindapore (90.18 per cent), North 24 Parganas (89.38 per cent) and Kolkata. “Kolkata in the fifth position has a pass percentage of 88.93,” he added.

The Board president also announced with pride that number of girls who sat for the examinations this year was 1,58, 185 higher than the number of the boys.

“The government is making a lot of effort so that the girls go to school and study at least till the 10th standard,” he said.
