Madan Mitra injured as lift gets stuck
Kolkata: Trinamul Congress leader Madan Mitra was injured after the elevator he was riding malfunctioned on the top floor of a four-storey Metro building in Shyambazar on Tuesday.
The Metro authorities said that the lift, used for only transporting equipment, got stuck between the two upper floors of the building, housing a power sub-station, on Bhupen Bose Avenue. It was gradually brought down by mechanics to rescue him.
With injuries in his shoulder and waist, Mr Mitra has been admitted to Sagar Dutta Hospital, off BT Road in Kamarhati, North 24 Parganas.
The former minister alleged that he was stuck in the elevator for an hour in darkness. He visited the building to campaign for the Metro railway recreation body’s election on Wednesday.
“It was my sheer luck that I survived. While leaving I walked into the lift, which suddenly got stuck before coming down from the top floor at a high speed to hit the ground. I suffered injuries in my shoulder and waist,” Mr Mitra said.
“I don’t know whether there was any technical snag or the lift just came off from above. I remained trapped inside for an hour,” he said.
“But there was no problem breathing since the lift had collapsible gate door. There was no liftman, although the railways is a big organisation,” he added.
According to sources, overcrowding may have caused the accident.
