Kolkata: Two persons were arrested by a special police team from Behala early on Tuesday for allegedly stealing cash from the ATMs in the south western parts of the city.

The police found that most thefts took place at night in the wake of the Centre’s demonitisation move.

On Monday, deputy commissioner of police (southwest), Meeraj Khalid, held a meeting with the officer-in-charge of all police stations under his division and formed a special team for keeping surveillance.

Mr Khalid said, “Around 3am on Tuesday, Shiv Shankar Rajbhar of B.L. Saha Road in Kalabagan was seen inside an ATM — whose shutter was half down — near 184/1 Roy Bahadur Road in Behala. Our team intercepted him and recovered plas, wrench, and screwdriver from him. He was trying to break open the ATM.”

During questioning, the accused told the police that another person, Pappu Halder, a taxi driver of Canal Road, was waiting for him nearby. Later, the police also arrested Pappu Halder.

Mr Khalid added, “They have admitted of committing thefts in the ATMs of Regent Park, Jadavpur, and other areas.” Both the accused were remanded in nine-day police custody by the court till December 7.
