Districts outshine city in HS

Out of 53 in top-10, 44 from districts 0.55 per cent rise in overall pass percentage.

Kolkata: Students in the districts have once again outclassed their counterparts in the city in the higher secondary (HS) examination, which saw a rise in the overall pass percentage as the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education declared this year’s HS examination results on Tuesday. The topper and those, who jointly stood second and third are from Hooghly.

Archisman Panigrahi of Hooghly Collegiate School stood first in the HS examination with 99.2 per cent marks.

Mayanka Chattopadhyay of Mahesh Sri Ramkrishna Ashram Vidyalaya in Hooghly, who scored 98.4 per cent marks, stood second jointly with Upamanyu Chakrabarty of Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya in South 24 Parganas.

Subham Sinha from Arambagh High School in Hooghly stood third jointly with Surajit Lohar from Bankura Zila School. Both scored 97.8 per cent marks.

Out of 53 successful candidates in the top-10 merit list, 44 are from districts while the rest are from the city. Among them, the boys outshined the girls this time as 40 of them are male and 13 are female.

Out of 7,56,620 HS examinees, 6,22,435 were successful. In what appeared to be the best pass percentage in the last 15 years, the overall pass percentage rose by 0.55 per cent to 84.20 per cent from last year’s 83.65 per cent.

Announcing the results WBCHSE president Mohua Das said, “3,302 students received O grade (90-100 per cent), 35,881 students got A+ grade (80-89 per cent), 82,678 students received A grade (70-79 per cent) and 42 per cent students got more than 60 per cent marks, the first division.” While East Midnapore topped the list of districts with the highest pass percentage at 92.87, West Midnapore came second with 89.61 per cent followed by South 24 Parganas with 87.62 per cent and Hooghly with 87.56 per cent. Kolkata came in the fifth position with 87.37 per cent.

Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and chief minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the successful candidates. Wishing them a very bright future the Governor said, “Those who couldn’t succeed in the exam have no occasion to lose heart for this one exam does not determine the entire life. They should remember that Success is not far away.”

Ms Banerjee tweeted, “My congratulations and best wishes to all the students who have passed Uccha Madhyamik examination. Wish all of you a bright future.”
