Molestation case on train hits wall

Mumbai: The probe into the Konark Express molestation case seems to have hit a wall as at least five of the suspects, who allegedly matched the description of the unidentified accused who behaved inappropriately with teenaged girl, did not turn out to be one.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) had detained these suspects based on the victim’s description of the accused as the spot, at a Thane railway station platform where the incident happened, was not covered by any CCTV camera.

However on being shown to the victim, a teenaged girl, she stated that none of the suspects was the person.

The railway police are now facing a tough task as lack of CCTV camera footage has made it further difficult to find the person. Since the incident took place at around 3.45am on Sunday, the presence of commuters was also low.

“There are no eyewitnesses in the case as yet. Therefore, we have started scanning the footage of Thane city suspecting him to have exited from the station premises. ” said a GRP officer, privy to the investigation.

The officials stated that the likelihood of the accused taking any other train is not possible as there was no train, citing the odd hours. The GRP is now also questioning the canteen operators and the homeless people who sleep outside Thane station every night.
