Thane: The Thane police arrested a woman and three other persons in the Bhiwandi township in Thane for allegedly killing her one-year-old son and then burying the body to hide the crime.

The 21-year-old woman got married to a man in March 2016 and the couple later had a son, Narpoli police station's senior inspector S D Jadhav said.

However, they later started having fights and were living separately since the last four months, he said.

In the meantime, the woman got into a relationship with another man and decided to get rid of the child.

Hence, the woman along with her paramour and the latter's two friends allegedly strangulated the child to death on Tuesday night and buried the body at an industrial compound in Mankoli village, Jadhav said.

Suspecting something amiss, the woman's estranged husband lodged a complaint with the police in connection with his son's disappearance, he said.

The police, acting on a tip-off, exhumed the body on Wednesday in the presence of local tehsildar and medical officers and sent it for postmortem to the IGM Hospital in Bhiwandi, he said.

Subsequently, the police arrested the woman and the three others and booked them under IPC sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), he said.
