Bombay High Court directs IIT-B to inspect Wadala collapse
Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Saturday directed the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) to form a team of experts that should include civil engineer, structural engineer and geotechnical engineer to carry out inspection and suggest long term remedial measures at Wadala where the compound wall of Lloyd building adjacent to a construction site of Dosti Realty collapsed, burying several cars in debris on June 25. The court has also asked the experts to find out the cause of incident. The court issued this direction while hearing a petition filed by residents of affected site seeking cancellation of the sanctioned construction plan.
Dosti Blossom Co-operative Housing Society Ltd on Friday moved a petition before the division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Riyaz Chagla challenging the permission granted to Dosti Realty Pvt Ltd to construct high-rise buildings in the adjoining plot. They alleged that the construction is a threat to other buildings in the area. Considering the fact that help of an expert agency is immediately necessary the division bench of Justice took up this petition for hearing on Saturday noon in its chamber. However, the bench refused to go into the merits of the controversy raised in the petition.
The bench has asked the expert agency to visit the affected properties to ascertain urgent measures that need to be taken for dealing with the situation arising due to the incident of June 25.
The bench has also asked the expert committee to take consult structural engineer Shantilal Jain, who has been appointed as court commissioner by the city civil court that is hearing a suit in regard with same property. Mr Jain had suggested some measures on the day of incident and the work is already on.
