MMRDA launches STAMP for crowd management

With the new order, the BEML will be manufacturing 84 rakes for the Mumbai Metro.

Mumbai: The MMRDA, the nodal agency for development of the metro system, Wednesday launched the Station Access and Mobility Programme (STAMP) to manage crowds better and attract more commuters. This initiative will be based on a survey conducted by companies and NGOs. The programme will enable a public-private partnership to seek innovative data and technology-based solutions to improve crowd management. The pilot programme will be run on the metro 1 (Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar) route.

“It will also study how and why growing commuters are using private transport like rickshaws, buses and private vehicles to reach their destination. Insufficient public transport is the reason for commuters to opt for private transport system,” said Madhav Pai of the World Resource Institute.

“Nearly 200 km network of metro services will be added in the coming years. MMRDA will carry out planning to make all necessary facilities available at all metro stations,” said
R A Rajeev, commissioner, MMRDA.

21 extra rakes to be purchased for city metro

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to purchase 21 more rakes for the metro 2-A, 2-B and 7 corridors in light of the network’s extension while an order for 63 rakes has already been placed.

In November last year, Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML), the biggest rail coach factory in India, was awarded a contract of '3,015 crore for 378 coaches of Metro Lines 2-A, 2-B and 7.

Mumbai metropolitan commissioner R.A. Rajeev, ministry of housing and urban affairs secretary Durga Mishra and DMRC managing director Mangu Singh on Wednesday visited the manufacturing unit at the Bengluru.

With the new order, the BEML will be manufacturing 84 rakes for the Mumbai Metro. Each rake will have six coaches with a sitting capacity of 334 passengers each. According the MMRDA, the first prototype rake is expected to reach the depot by July 2020. The mockup coach will be ready by September 2020.
