Mumbai: Mumbai traffic was smooth throughout the day on New Year’s Eve, according to the Mumbai traffic police. However, Sunday night saw some traffic congestion near Juhu Chowpatty and Marine Drive owing to a larger number of pedestrians out to celebrate the occasion. Amitesh Kumar, joint CP (traffic), said, “There was traffic congestion on N.S. Road near Marine Drive and in the area near Juhu Chowpatty for a short while after 12am.”

There were cab bookings by drunken passengers too. A spokesperson for Ola Cabs said, “As part of our awareness drive Peeke Mat Chala, we witnessed phenomenal response from our customers who opted to book an Ola.” However, he was unable to furnish data on the bookings, which he said is still being compiled.

Meanwhile, private cab operators such as Ola and Uber experienced significant increase in bookings on New Year’s Eve. “With the beginning of Christmas, we intimate our drivers about huge passenger demand. This year too, there was a rush for booking drivers,” said a spokesperson for Uber.

The Mumbai traffic police had made special traffic arrangements at spots that are a favourite with New Year revellers i.e. Bandra Bandstand, Marine Drive and Worli Seaface.
